A newspaper article from September 1913 states: “It is estimated that 40,000 apologies have been offered by Cañon City people to visitors for the old Santa Fe Depot and the company is now coming across quite handsomely with a dollar for each apology.” The new depot that would serve passengers, as well as freight, was considered to be one of the finest railroad architecture, with its hip and gable roof, concrete floors, and modern finishings. This news was a victory to the many private citizens, members of the Business Men’s Association and City Council who had voiced their complaints and frustrations over the state of the existing structure.īuilt on the original site, work began in 1913 on the new $40,000 depot. In October 1912, it was announced that a new depot would be built. Supreme Court, on April 21, 1879, granted the D&RG the primary right to build through the gorge. Not to be outdone the D&RG simply moved further up the gorge and started laying tracks, thus initiating the Royal Gorge War that lasted until the U.S. Just a few hours later, crews from the D&RG also arrived but were blocked by the Santa Fe’s equipment. On April 18, 1878, crews from the Santa Fe made the first move to lay tracks in the Royal Gorge starting at the mouth just west of Cañon City. Peace between the two companies did not last for long as both sought to establish a rail line in through the narrow Royal Gorge. Luckily for Cañon City, the town was situated right in the path, and tracks connecting Pueblo to Cañon City following the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad rail line were finished in the mid-1870s. Mining was booming in the Leadville area and the Santa Fe with tracks in Pueblo needed to build west to access the lucrative business that would be found in the mining districts. However, it wasn’t Cañon City that brought the Atchison, Topeka Santa Fe Railway to Fremont County but Leadville.
